Fractures & Injuries

Patients can either be treated in the Emergency Department or admitted for surgery for stabilizing a sprain, fracture or broken bone. If the injury requires immobilization, a member of Ortho Force may apply a cast, a splint (partial cast) or a removable brace to support the injured area.

Cast Care:
If a cast is applied to support the injury, proper cast care is required. Patients should not remove the cast unless instructed to do so by the physician.

  • Elevate the injured area higher than your heart for at least 72 hrs and then as needed to reduce swelling.
  • Apply ice packs to the injury for at least 72 hrs (on for 20 minutes, off for 20 minutes) and then as needed for pain relief. The ice may be applied over the cast, but be sure to watch for leaking water.
  • Keep the cast/splint clean and dry.
  • Do not stick anything inside the cast /splint.
  • You may move body parts that are not covered by the cast, such as fingers and toes. Frequent motion of the fingers and toes with help reduce swelling and prevent joint stiffness.
  • Take pain medication only as prescribed. Do not drink alcohol or drive if taking pain medication.
  • Contact your physician’s office if you feel that the cast/splint is rubbing or causing blisters.

Signs that the Cast/Splint is too tight.

  • If you have any of the following symptoms, contact the Ortho Force office immediately.
  • Puffy, sausage-like fingers or toes
  • Fingers or toes that have numbness or cannot feel a pin prick
  • Very blue or very white fingers or toes
  • Clamped down fingers or toes that cannot be extended without severe pain
  • Increasing pain despite rest, ice and elevation
