Sports Medicine

Sports-related strains, sprains, tendonitis and injuries are addressed with the goal of placing the athlete or weekend warrior back on track as quickly as possible. Ortho Force also provides medical sideline coverage for local high school sports teams.

What is tennis elbow?
Tennis elbow is also known as lateral epicondylitis. Symptoms include:

  • Pain and tenderness located on the outer aspect of the elbow
  • Increased pain with gripping, lifting or wrist extension activities (such as lifting and pouring a pitcher of water)
  • Morning elbow stiffness

Mild cases can be resolved with rest, heat/ice, using a tennis elbow strap and avoiding aggravating activities. If the symptoms persist or increase, an evaluation by an Ortho Force surgeon is suggested. X-rays will be taken to look for bone injury, and the orthopedist may prescribe anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy or cortisone shot (for severe cases).

Golfer’s elbow is a similar condition that is marked by pain located on the inside of the elbow.

What is a meniscus tear?
The meniscus is the shock-absorbing cartilage located between the two large bones of the knee. It can become pinched between these bones, producing a tear.

Symptoms include knee swelling, pain along the joint line, pain at end points of motion and a sensation of locking, catching or clicking. Care includes rest, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy and possibly a steroid injection to reduce inflammation. X-rays will be taken to evaluate the injury.

If symptoms persist, a diagnostic MRI imaging study may be ordered to evaluate the soft tissues of the knee that can't be seen on x-rays. An Ortho Force surgeon will review the MRI and discuss arthroscopy as indicated by the findings.
